  • Orchard Harvest 2017 – Using external data with Orchard

    Jorge Agraz is opening the conference after Sébastien Ros’ keynote with a talk about using external data in Orchard. Jorge work for Onestop, a company that builds e-commerce sites. Their web sites get their commerce data from APIs and then used to display that through their controllers with Orchard shapes. They attempted to use widgets instead of controllers, but that came with some significant maintenance problems.

    After introducing our (yet small) Support page the most important thing you'll notice that we retired the forum and introduced GitHub! More specifically you can add feature request and other ideas, ask questions, and post bugreports under the DotNest Support GitHub repository.

  • Using MoreLikeThis in Lucene to displayed related content in Orchard CMS

    Lucene has an awesome class for finding related content called MoreLikeThis. It is what powers the Related section on Stack Overflow, and many more sites I'm sure. Aaron Johnson has an excellent overview of how it works on his blog. It is a bit wordy but well worth a read. Lucene.NET is a port of Lucene for .NET and (generally) examples written for Lucene (java) work just fine when converted to .NET.

  • Replacing orchard layout's use of the http session with the cache

    The Orchard Layout's module uses the http session to store data as you edit elements. This isn't great when it times out and you lose everything you've been working on. An easy solution would be to simply extend the session timeout in the web.config but I looked at the code and it doesn't just implement the http session directly, this is orchard, it's abstracted out of course. Clearly someone thought session might not be ideal. Maybe they were thinking more along the lines of web farms and sessionless set ups but whatever.

    It was a recurring request we received from all of you people running Orchard sites on DotNest that it should be easier to build image carousels/sliders. So we listened and added a module to allow just that!

  • Next/Previous Blog Post Buttons in Orchard

    So I'm currently building a little blog, nothing too fancy, but I wanted next and previous buttons, which don't come out of the box. First thing I did, like the good little developer that I am, was google it. I forgot to put "OrchardCMS" in the first time so just got a bunch of posts on Wordpress forums complaining that they couldn't add said buttons. Not particularly helpful. So I amended my query and what did I find? A module that called Mod.NextPreviousItem, that I wrote back in 2013! Random. Anyway, so this module is old and more complicated than I needed for my simple next/previous blog post. So I stole a few lines of code and tada, next/previous buttons.
